Microsoft dismissed Baldur’s Gate 3 as a ‘second-run Stadia PC RPG’ before it released—Larian doesn’t blame them-

After it launched, Baldur’s Gate 3 hit a phenomenal 800,000 concurrent Steam players and received PC Gamer’s highest review score in 16 years, but during its years in early access, it wasn’t widely expected to be the next big thing. Take as an example this May 2022 document accidentally leaked by Microsoft as part of its lawsuit with the FTC which dismissed Baldur’s Gate 3 as a “second-run Stadia PC RPG” that Microsoft figured it could get onto PC Game Pass for about $5 million.

You’d think Larian might be insulted by the lack of faith, but the truth is that the Baldur’s Gate 3 developer didn’t think its RPG would be this big of a deal either. Larian boss Swen Vincke is on record as worrying that Baldur’s Gate 3 might have peaked in Early Access.

Nvidia announces ‘the most powerful single slot GPU on the planet’ but it’s a workstation card so naturally costs $1,250-

At 6,144 CUDA cores, 20GB of GDDR6, and a 130W TDP, the RTX 4000 is “the most powerful single slot GPU on the planet” according to Nvidia. A tantalising glimpse of a genuinely slimline graphics cards—if you can look past the price.

Stuffed with an Ada Lovelace AD104 chip, the RTX 4000 delivers the same graphical architecture found inside the entire RTX 40-series GeForce lineup. It loosely slots in between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti in the GeForce stack, though it’s not an exact match for all its extra VRAM.

Extra VRAM but less bandwidth. This card comes with a 160-bit memory bus for 360GB/s overall. It’s also a slimmer core count than the RTX 4000 mobile chip already found in workstation laptops, though this wouldn’t be the first time Nvidia trimmed back the desktop …

Rounding up the games industry’s best jokes, japery, and doggone tomfoolery from April Fools 2023-

April Fools is no laughing matter—in today’s climate of endemic misinformation, every day is April Fools if you ask me. Still, despite the crisis of Truth in today’s internet, figures from throughout the gaming world still press on with their unconscionable horseplay, pumping out fake, silly announcements alongside real news and leaving humble reporters such as myself to sort out the difference. What follows is a dispatch from the front lines of April Fools, my favorite sins from this yearly celebration of lies.

Modder “fixes” Dark Souls’ worst boss

You may remember Crest from their work going out of bounds in Demon’s Souls. Well on this holiest of days the modder decided to “fix” infamous Dark Souls puzzle boss Bed of Chaos… by throwing in clu…

And the award for the saddest patch notes ever goes to Babylon’s Fall-

Babylon’s Fall was not a good game by most accounts: we gave the co-op action RPG a 45% in our review, and the best it could muster on Steam was 482 “Mostly Negative” user reviews. Still, its final update is a heartbreaker.

Just six months after Babylon’s Fall came out, developer Platinum Games (one of our favorites, usually) canceled plans for large-scale updates and announced that, although it received many “enthusiastic messages of support,” it couldn’t keep the live service game online.

“Despite all of your support, we are truly sad and sorry to say that we will be unable to continue with the game’s service,” the studio wrote. “We hope you continue to enjoy playing Babylon’s Fall until the service ends.”

That was in September of last year, and although the $6…

The Foxhole devs are making a medieval warfare MMO that supports 1000s of players at once-

Foxhole developer Siege Camp has unveiled a new project called Anvil Empires that promises to let players take part in massive medieval battles of up to 1,000 people at a time in an open-world sandbox “with no safe zones or other artificial barriers to combat.”

The game takes place in the fantasy realm of Calligo, a persistent world in which three “desperate alliances” exist in a constant state of war. The continent contains an array of different landscapes and dangerous creatures, as well as “dark secrets” of indeterminate types for players to discover.

Medieval warfare is about more than just clubbing people in the face with heavy objects: You’re not going to do very well if you don’t have your supply situation nailed down. To that end, players will also have to build and …

Slay the Spire 2 releases in 2025- ‘The Spire isn’t what it used to be’-

Slay the Spire, the brilliant roguelike deckbuilder that first released in early access in 2017, is getting a sequel next year.

Slay the Spire 2 was announced with a teaser video, embedded above, at the Triple-I Initiative showcase today. It’s quite a glow up: A brief but sweet animated reintroduction to the Spire.

Near the end of the teaser, we see what I assume will be Slay the Spire 2’s three launch characters: The Ironclad and The Silent, and a new skeleton character. A screenshot on Slay the Spire 2’s just-launched Steam page reveals the skeleton to be The Necrobinder, “a wandering lich who seeks to bind the forgotten corpse.”

I’m a little sad not to see my boy The Defect, the first character I beat the original Slay the Spire with, but we don’t know for sure what…

The devs of this ‘freaky and grotesque’ adventure game about a Russian Orthodox nun left Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine, and they’re out ‘to show that people and authorities are not the same thing’-

Not many games have a story like Indika, a game about a 19th century Russian Orthodox nun journeying to the centre of her soul with an “unusual, horn-headed companion.” Drawing inspiration from Dostoevsky and Bulgakov and dripping with dark humour, Indika tells a tale of religion and authority, madness and belief.

But also, not many games have a story like Indika, whose developer Odd Meter left Russia when the country invaded Ukraine in February last year. Calling the invasion an “insane crime” perpetrated to “satisfy the ambitions of an elderly, weak-minded dwarf,” game director and studio founder Dmitry Svetlow decided to up and move Indika’s development—and the company behind it—out of Moscow to neighbouring Kazakhstan, even moving the “entire recording studio by t…

Twitch starts to address ‘deepfake porn’, and the first thing to go is that phrase-

As the world’s leading streaming platform Twitch continues to grow, so do the problems it encounters with various types of bad behaviour. 2022 was probably the most dramatic year in Twitch’s history, and 2023 began with another breed of deeply gross scandal: The popular streamer Atrioc visited a so-called deepfake website live on-stream, which featured explicit and faked imagery of women streamers including Maya Higa and Pokimane.

Atrioc subsequently apologised and stepped back from streaming for a while, but the damage was done and the distress it caused those streamers featured on the website was public and clear to see. Twitch has now outlined how it plans to address “deepfake porn” incidents, both on and off the platform, and starts by addressing the term …

Evidence is mounting for an upcoming Minecraft Bedrock world editor mode-

First reported by Eurogamer, a Minecraft-focused account by the name of Roger Badgerman shared a 45-second clip of a purported Minecraft world editor—a functionality that would allow for rapid, large scale changes to a Minecraft world or the construction of massive structures on the fly.

The innovation here would be implementing such a feature in Minecraft Bedrock, the retail, multiplatform version of Minecraft that took it to such superstar heights on the tablets of nephews and little cousins the world over. As Eurogamer alludes, such functionality has been hinted at in datamining for a while now, like in this post from Minecraft add-on developer SmokeyStack.

The classic, harder core Java edition of Minecraft has had mods that allow for large-scale editing for …

Valheim player crushes ‘hard mode’ speedrun competition in under 8 hours, still finds time to appreciate the mountain’s solemn beauty-

In August, Iron Gate unveiled the Trial of Tyr, a competition to see who could complete the fastest solo speedrun through Valheim’s punishing new hard mode. Two months later, the task is complete, with the winner, a Chinese player named Zhengyuan, blowing through the whole thing in under eight hours.

Zhengyuan, known in the community as Time Traveller, said he’s been playing Valheim shortly after it launched into early access in February 2021. He’s got roughly 4,500 hours into the game at this point, and said almost all of his spare time is dedicated to it. He’s also active in the community, known for making guides and videos about the game, and said that he’s believed to be the first player in China to complete the game with a single life—which led him to start speedrunning…

Venba’s gorgeous meals stir up the joy and challenge of recreating family recipes-

Watch On

Telling an authentic story is at the heart of Venba, which focuses on the mother of a family of Indian immigrants to Canada in the ’80s. With a new trailer at the Wholesome Games Showcase, the team at Visai Games dropped the release date for its debut narrative: July 31.

Told looking through the lens of the meals her family makes together, Venba promises that you’ll cook “authentic food from regional South Indian cuisine” and from the lovely stylized art, the recipes already look ready to eat. Venba’s cookbook was damaged in the move to Canada, so you’ll have to puzzle out the mangled recipes and missing ingredients to answer the eternal question: “What’s for dinner?” Every part of Venba looks like a heartfelt love letter to south Indi…
